How to "Selfie" | A Guide to Taking Selfies for the Creative Business Owner

Like it or not, selfies have become a cultural norm.  And while there have definitely been times when I have bashed them - because, I mean, not every selfie belongs on your feed, (unless you're my new Instagram pal, Mr Pimp Good Game ), they also happen to be one of the most popular styles of photos posted to the platform.

In fact, even in general conversations with friends + clients, it seems to be true that most see a higher amount of engagement on the photos they post of themselves versus any other types of photos.

So, Why is that?

Maybe it's because we really like people.  We are naturally social creatures.  When we see the person who is usually behind the camera appear in our feed, we feel more of a connection.  So, we comment + like the photo because it feels more real to engage with an actual person.

I also think selfies tend to get a bad wrap because... you know, duck face.

Seriously though, what makes a selfie so much different than just posting a regular photo or headshot of yourself that SOMEONE ELSE took?  Is it the perceived underlying "vanity" of actually doing it oneself that leaves a bad taste?  I blame the Kardashians... (for basically everything).

Whether we choose to get on board with them or not, the selfie doesn't seem to be going anywhere.  And I think that embracing the trend + incorporating selfies into your business' Instagram account can be a great way to connect more deeply with your audience.

However, before you pick up that smartphone and start snapping, there are a few things I feel that you should avoid when you start taking selfies to post on your account.

Check out the video below where I explain what to do, what not to do, and what tools I use when I take my own selfies.  BONUS, if you scroll down a little further, I have actually created an instant download sheet for you to reference which links to all of the items that I mention in the video...

So, to recap...

1. DON'T TAKE A SELFIE IN THE CAR, (AND DEF NOT ONE WITH YOUR SEATBELT ON) #boring

2. DON'T TAKE A SELFIE IN A DIRTY MIRROR #someoneneedssomewindex

3. DO GET CREATIVE WITH THE COMPOSITION/CROP TO ADD INTEREST #soartsy

4. DO MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS HAVE GREAT LIGHTING #duh

5. DO INVEST IN A "SELFIE KIT" SO THAT YOU ARE ALWAYS READY TO SHOOT #believeinyourselfie

Hopefully you now feel a little more confident about taking a selfie.  I also hope you're excited to try out fun new ways to incorporate them into your feed on Instagram.  Let's make a pact to kick the boring old "I'm in the car doing nothing" selfie to the curb, (do people still say that?).  Let's get creative, ok?!

Oh, and don't forget to download this cheat sheet with all of the items that I mentioned in the video, so you can get everything you need to put together your very own "Selfie Kit"!!
